The Back Story

During a Masters at Otago University, Inspiring Stories Founder & CEO Guy Ryan and fellow student Nick Holmes co-produced the film Carving the Future.

The internationally acclaimed 25-minute documentary, Carving the Future follows four passionate young Kiwis leading inspiring community projects in response to climate change and environmental challenges. Released in 2010, the film has now been seen by thousands of Kiwis, kick-started solution-focused projects in schools and communities throughout New Zealand, and screened in over 30 countries around the world. The films accolades include finalist for Best New Zealand Film at Reel Earth, Best Film at the Colorado Film Awards, and one of three finalists in the world for the BBC’s prestigious ‘Best Newcomer’ Award at Wildscreen 2010. One thousand copies of the film we’re self-funded and distributed on DVD into schools and communities around New Zealand.

Inspired by the film’s power as catalyst for conversation and action, Guy set up the Inspiring Stories Trust in late 2010, and went on to win a ‘World of Difference’ scholarship from the Vodafone NZ Foundation to bring the Trust and it’s ambitious series of programmes to life.
